The story of our project
Draft – not complete:
The Marie and Lindsey SoTL Project Story
Chapter 2, our SoTL Project
We met today, Friday, June 24, 2022 when the water in the Thompson Rivers was extremely high.
Marie took this photo in Riverside Park the morning of the meeting. Onlookers said that there are predictions that the river will reach levels it saw in 1969.
We spent just over an hour on TEAMS this afternoon
Decisions:
SOCI 1110 two sections
We will use the same debate activity in both sections, except where the online modality will warrant an alternate learning environment.
Despite the modality, our focus remains on the critical thinking ILO. Where is critical thinking most optimal?
Does the online modality enhance critical thinking? Does it make a difference?
What will be the same (4 components in OER):
- Team to individual
- Front end output to back-end output
- Steps in the learning activity (visualized with Lego!) and almost all the guidance student receive.
Most immediate action:
Our REB application – we need to work on our very early draft, and all the consent forms.
Our tools so far:
- We are using Teams to meet and collaborate on documents
- We will use a PressBook to capture this story and the SoTL research.
We have hopes to make this project meaningful, interesting, and (as) easy (as possible) for the students and us. 😊

Dissemination Ideas:
Looking ahead, we are starting to also think about dissemination. If we present at CNIE in 2023, Diane Janes expects that presenters will be invited to submit proposals to The International Journal of eLearning and Distance Education (IJEDE). This year, presenters were given two formats:
We invite you and your co-presenters to contribute to the Journal, the research or practice experiences that you shared at the conference in two formats:
- a short research brief (up to 3500 words) or via
- a longer research article (up to 7000 words) for an anticipated fall publication.
And the timelines were as follows (for the May 2022 conference):
Submissions will be accepted between June 15th and September 1st, and all those who submit will also be expected to review at least two other submissions. The articles for this issue will be published beginning in late fall of 2022 (November/December). IJEDE has moved to a continuous publication model, so papers will be published as they are accepted for publication. Standard editorial practices for the IJEDE will apply, which includes a primary evaluation by an editor, and an anonymous review by two peer reviewers. For editorial details please review: http://www.ijede.ca/index.php/jde/about/submissions .
7 July 2022 – Marie
We met on Thursday, July 7, after Lindsey’s kids were caught in a downpour during a water fight in their summer camp. Thankfully all the camp kids were already swimming-ready and likely excited that nature decided to participate in their waterplay. While all of our kids partook in their respective summer activities, Lindsey and I completed our REB Application and Consent Notice! Hurray! We also made draft plans for this September’s debate activities! We also found that we have many things in common – not owning a TV, sharing a dislike of toy guns (including water guns), and enjoying unique dress up costumes – to name a few. Lindsey is now heading out east for a vacation, and I am flying out to the Czech Republic next week, hoping all is well with our flights and my daughter’s backlogged passport. After I am back, we will spend some time in August finessing the debate activity and research design.
Happy well deserved vacationing to us both!!!
